Farkle Rules and Score Sheet

Farkle is a six-dice push-your-luck game: roll, set aside scoring dice, then bank your points or risk another roll. A roll with no scoring dice is a Farkle and wipes out the turn's points. Most groups play to 10,000. Use the free score sheet below to total every turn, and read the full rules underneath.

How to play Farkle

You need six ordinary dice, a pencil or this page, and at least two players. Decide on a target score first; 10,000 is the usual choice.

  1. Roll all six diceAt the start of your turn, throw all six dice at once.
  2. Keep at least one scoring diePull out one or more dice that score, such as a 1, a 5 or three of a kind. You must keep at least one scoring die from every roll.
  3. Bank or roll againEither stop and add the turn's points to your total, or pick up the dice you did not keep and roll them for more.
  4. Hot diceIf every one of the six dice has scored, pick all six up again and keep going. The points you have built so far stay in the turn.
  5. A Farkle ends the turn with zeroIf a roll contains no scoring dice at all, you lose every point from that turn and the dice pass to the next player.
  6. Reach the target, then a final roundWhen someone banks enough to reach the target, everyone else gets one last turn to beat it. The highest total wins.

Only dice from the same roll can combine. Three 4s count as 400 only when they land together; a 4 kept from one roll and two more from the next are worth nothing. Twos, threes, fours and sixes score only as part of a set, so a lone 2 is not a scoring die.

Common house rules

Farkle has been passed around kitchen tables for a long time, so almost every group plays it a little differently. The score sheet above has a switch for each of the three most common changes.

Opening minimum

Some tables say you cannot bank your first points until a single turn is worth a set amount, usually 300 or 500. Until then your turn only counts if you push on and reach the minimum. Choose off, 300 or 500 on the sheet; it blocks a bank that is too small and tells you why.

Three Farkles in a row

A popular penalty takes 1,000 points away from anyone who Farkles on three turns in a row. The sheet counts each player's streak, applies the penalty on the third one, and never lets a total drop below zero.

Final round

Most groups let everyone else take one more turn after a player reaches the target, so the first player to cross the line is not automatically the winner. The sheet tracks that round and announces the winner, or a tie, when it ends.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Farkle?

Each turn you roll six dice and set aside scoring dice, such as single 1s, single 5s or three of a kind. Then you either bank your turn points or roll the remaining dice for more. If a roll scores nothing, that is a Farkle, and you lose the points from that turn. Most groups play to 10,000.

How many dice do you need for Farkle?

Farkle uses six standard six-sided dice. You start every turn by rolling all six. Dice that score are set aside, and you roll the rest. If all six dice score, you have hot dice and may pick all six up again and keep rolling, adding to the same turn total.

How do you score Farkle?

A common scoring set gives 100 points for a single 1 and 50 for a single 5. Three of a kind is worth 100 times its face value, with three 1s worth 1,000. Straights and three pairs score higher in many versions. Scoring varies by house, so our sheet lets you switch variants.

What is Farkle?

Farkle is a push-your-luck dice game for two or more players. On your turn you keep rolling to build a bigger score, but one roll with no scoring dice wipes out everything you collected that turn. It is easy to learn, quick to play, and works well as a game-night warm-up.

What does Farkle mean?

In the game, a Farkle is a roll where none of your dice score, which ends your turn with zero points for that turn. The word is also the name of the game itself. Some groups add a penalty if you Farkle several turns in a row, so agree on that before you start.

What happens if you get three Farkles in a row?

Under the basic rules nothing extra happens: each Farkle just ends your turn with no points. Many groups add a house rule where three Farkles in a row cost 1,000 points. It is a popular option, so the score sheet has a toggle for it, and you should agree on it before starting.
